Queen of Cups

Thoth Tarot
intuitionempathyemotional wisdomnurturinginner vision

Water of Water, the force of receptivity and reflection: a perfect mirror, a surface reflecting whoever looks into it. Deep empathy, intuition, a prophetess who builds her life by an inner voice.

The card's image

The Queen sits on a throne amid still waters. In her hand — a shell-shaped cup from which a crab is crawling, and the lotus of Isis, the Great Mother. She is enveloped in endless undulations of light, and in the sea her image is reflected almost without distortion. This is the purest expression of Water — exceedingly pure, beautiful, and endlessly subtle: to see the truth about her is hardly possible, for she reflects the nature of the observer with great perfection.

Interpretation

The Queen of Cups is the watery part of Water, her force that of receptivity and reflection. In the Tetragrammaton she corresponds to the first letter He: the Queens receive, excite, and transmit onward the original energy of the Knight Knight of Cups, which is why they are depicted on thrones. This is the purest expression of Water — exceedingly pure, beautiful, and endlessly subtle. She rules the Zodiac from 21° Gemini to 20° Cancer.

Her chief traits — dreaminess, illusion, and calm. The Queen of Cups is the ideal agent and patient: she is capable of receiving and transmitting anything, and she herself is untouched by it. This is a perfect mirror, the surface of water reflecting whoever looks into it. Her characteristics depend mainly on external influences — she takes the form of whatever is poured into her.

As a card — deep receptivity, empathy, gentle calm; the ability to hold and mirror the feelings of others; pure, nourishing, maternal water. The feminine principle of the element of water: intuition, a highly developed capacity for self-giving, responsiveness on the emotional level; she is a muse who instinctively senses the hidden talents of those nearby.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Receive and reflect — let feeling pass through you, but do not dissolve without remainder into another's will. Your strength lies in receptivity: listen to the inner voice, trust intuition more than reason, be a clean, nourishing mirror for those nearby. You are able to hold and mirror the feelings of others, to divine their hidden talents. But keep your own boundaries: the perfect mirror stays clear only while the water is pure. Reflect without losing yourself.

What the forecast holds

Ahead: deep empathy, nourishing gentleness — an environment is forming that receives and mirrors feeling; or someone enters with the gift of intuition and self-giving. This is an awakening of the feminine principle of water — responsiveness, the capacity for self-giving, a sense of hidden talents. In the Thoth a prophetess is nearby, a wise woman who hears the inner voice. The forecast is warm and intuitive: trust your receptivity, and it will reliably guide you.

Queen of Cups reversed

In an unfavorable elemental environment all these qualities degenerate: everything that passes through her is refracted and distorted. People of this type often have no character of their own at all — beyond the ability to be at anyone's disposal; and their chief pleasure is to lead and attract others. Reversed: dissolution into another's will, illusoriness, emotional dependence, a distorting mirror, a dreaminess that loses itself. Reversals in the Thoth are conditional: the clean, reflecting water becomes muddy and loses its boundaries.

Queen of Cups — Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Thoth TarotQueen of Cups

This is the only court figure of the watery suit whose rank coincides in both decks: the Thoth's "Queen of Cups" is Waite's Queen of Cups. Both carry the feminine principle of the element of water — intuition, the gift of self-giving, emotional responsiveness. The difference lies in the emphasis of the image: in Waite her gift of foresight is underlined (a pensive figure with a closed cup by the water), while on the Thoth card she is depicted directly as a prophetess, a wise woman who follows only the inner voice.
