The Sun

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)
joyvitalityclaritysuccess

The number 19, looking us directly in the eyes. The archetype of the universal Father: master of the heavens, source of warmth and light. At its zenith it dissolves all shadows; the bonds of passion give way to human love.

The card's image

A radiant sun at its zenith looks directly at us; its eyes are white with black pupils. Beneath it, two figures with yellow hair cross a blue river. Of the lesser demons' shackles, only a red necklace on the throat, turned feet, and a line on the chest remain. The figure on the right stands on a piece of white, purified earth; the other stretches a hand toward it to cross the waters. Three colors repeat in the sky, on the earth, and in the people. The river rises toward the sun in five blue drops. A green strip gives birth to plants. Behind them, a short red-and-yellow wall.

Interpretation

The Sun is the archetype of the universal Father: master of the heavens, the source of all warmth and light, giving life to all creatures. Being at its zenith, it dissolves all shadows: the Moon's The Moon intuitive orange glow has yielded to the clear yellow light of the Celestial Father.

Beneath its rays — two figures crossing a river; in them are recognized the humanized lesser demons of the Devil The Devil. The energy that was in the darkness of XV comes out into the light, and the bonds of passion are replaced by relationships of mutual help, human love in its pure form — a deep and free friendship under the Sun's protection.

Upright — mutual love, brotherhood, mutual help, a happy union. A new life in which past difficulties have been left behind; the crystallization of a loving couple, the meeting of a kindred soul. Unconditional love, success founded on a passionate and enlightened approach; clarity, awareness, warmth accessible to all.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Allow the conscious part to lead the animal toward joy; build on love and clarity. The difficulties of the past are behind — step into the light, into relationships of mutual help and brotherhood. Reach out a hand and accept the hand reached toward you: the twins cross the river together, not separately. Beside the Devil The Devil your passion is transformed into human love; but beware of excess light — blinding clarity that denies shadow scorches the earth.

What the forecast holds

Success, new life, unconditional love are coming. Ahead lies a happy union, an emergence into the light, the finding of a kindred soul, the crystallization of a couple; past difficulties are left behind. This is realization in any domain — emotional, creative, material — on a passionate and enlightened foundation. Warmth and clarity will become accessible to all if you accept mutual help rather than rivalry.

The Sun reversed

The reversed Sun — an excess of sun causing drought and death, turning the earth into a desert. Fixation on a present or absent father figure, creating a mythical paternal image impossible to live up to. Rivalry instead of mutual help (the twins as competitors); excessive warmth, blinding clarity, a refusal to acknowledge shadow and 'night.'

How it differs from Waite

The Sun — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Sun
Tarot de Marseille (Conver)The Sun

Waite places under the sun one naked child on a white horse with a red banner, amid sunflowers behind a wall — joy, innocence, unclouded triumph. The Marseille Sun has two figures, and these are the humanized lesser demons of the Devil: the bonds of passion give way to mutual help, human love. Waite emphasizes childlike joy and vitality; Marseille emphasizes union and brotherhood as the outcome of inner work: the conscious part of the personality helps the animal gain access to a new reality; the adult leads the inner child toward joy. This is not a solitary radiance but a relationship of mutual help under the patronage of the paternal archetype.
