The Hermit

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)
solitudewisdomself-knowledgethe search for truth

The number 9 — the only odd number of the first series that is divisible (9 = 3×3): active and receptive at once. The Hermit moves backward, turning his face toward the new cycle; in retreating, he advances.

The card's image

An old man holds a lantern raised upward to shed light over the past. Like the Papesse, he is closely wrapped: multi-layered, cold, wintry garments — the Saturnian chill of wisdom; his hump concentrates all past experience and memory. Two orange crescents — developed receptive qualities. In the fold of the hand holding the lantern, a woman's hips are discernible. Three furrows on his brow. Blue hair and beard link him to the Emperor; a blue glove like the Pope's. The red staff of the Fool has here taken a curved form. At the center of his garments, green cloth — the color of eternity.

Interpretation

The Hermit leaves behind the perfection of Justice Justice: to linger there would mean death, and so he abandons it and enters a crisis. He goes backward, turning his back to the end of the first cycle and his face toward the beginning of the next; in retreating, he moves forward.

Upright — a crisis that cannot be avoided and must be accepted; deep change, transition. Solitude, wisdom, experience, asceticism, bringing clarity. The image of the teacher, therapist, guide who shines a lantern over the path already traveled. Letting go, the ability to turn answers into questions.

He has been compared to a fruit in the ninth month: everything has already formed, and now he prepares to relinquish the only environment he has known in order to enter the unknown. Unlike the Pope The Pope, who knows where the bridge leads, the Hermit walks into the unknown without any mastery.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Retreat, let go, illuminate the path already traveled — and trust the transformation. The crisis that has come cannot be circumvented: it must be accepted as a transition, not as a defeat. Turn answers into questions, relinquish comfortable positions. Beside Justice Justice beware of getting stuck in the perfectionism of the past; beside the Wheel Wheel of Fortune accept the end of the cycle in order to begin a new one.

What the forecast holds

A passage into the unknown is coming — renewal or the dying of the old. Ahead lie solitude, crisis, the gaining of wisdom through experience; deep change that must be accepted. Like a fruit in the ninth month, you are preparing to leave a familiar environment for new life. Behind the crisis, if it is accepted, a new cycle will open; if not — frozen solitude.

The Hermit reversed

The reversed Hermit — crisis turned into decline: poverty, loneliness, degeneration, cold. The 'vagabond' or even the alcoholic hiding 'a quart of wine in the lantern.' Nine retreating in fear back into eight: rigid perfectionism, clinging to one's beliefs and achievements, refusing to question oneself again. The absent, silent father; frozen solitude in which no transformation takes place. Beside Justice this is the fear of leaving the perfection of the past.

How it differs from Waite

The Hermit — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Hermit
Tarot de Marseille (Conver)The Hermit

Waite places the Hermit on a snowy summit, facing us, with a lantern in which the Star of Solomon burns — the image of the sage-beacon who has reached the heights and shines for seekers. The Marseille Hermit moves backward — turned away from the end of the cycle, he advances toward the beginning of a new one; in retreating, he goes forward. Waite emphasizes attained wisdom and solitary illumination; Marseille emphasizes the crisis of transition: the Hermit as a fruit in the ninth month, ready to relinquish the only environment it has known and enter the unknown without any mastery whatsoever.

Symbolism & correspondences

The degree of number 9 — nine, the only odd number of the first series that is divisible (3×3): active and receptive at once, therefore dual.
