The High Priestess

Manara Erotic Tarot
intuitioninner knowingmysterystillnesswisdom

Hidden desires and the fear of admitting one's dark side: sensuality wrestles with righteousness. True motives hide beneath the mask of "I must be a certain way."

The card's image

A nun keeps righteousness and propriety only on the outside; beneath the habit lies nakedness. Opposite her loins stands a frame: with a photograph of a beloved? with the image of a saint? What she lusts for, who or what is the object of her desire, must be discerned with the utmost sensitivity. True wants are hidden beneath the veil of "this is how one ought to behave."

Interpretation

Manara's High Priestess is about hidden desires and the fear of admitting one's dark side. On the outside all is decorous and righteous, and beneath it sensuality wrestles with an imposed "I must behave this way."

The card can point to the urge to hold a partner through sex: to bind him to base passions, hoping to build love upon that. And all the while to hide behind the most innocent behavior, as if you want nothing in return.

The frame stands opposite the loins, not at the level of the heart or head. This betrays an attachment to pleasures: the object of lust is perceived as nothing but sex. The true motive is hidden even from you.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Lift the righteous mask, at least before yourself, and honestly name what you want and who draws you. Beside dynamic cards: it is time to admit your desires aloud, without the shame of "what will people say." Beside static ones: don't rush to act, dwell in self-knowledge, let the attraction ripen at the level of fantasy before you bring it out into the open.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies a situation with a false bottom and hidden motives: you may want to seduce your partner, but you'll do it slyly, anything not to look like "that kind" of woman. With dynamic neighbors everything will clear up and the desire will come to light; with static ones it will remain a secret longing you never dare to admit.

The High Priestess reversed

The reversed High Priestess is a mask that has grown into the face. Righteousness turns from defense into self-deception: you hide desire so diligently beneath "I must" that you stop hearing your true self, and the longing rots inside as shame and prudishness. In another version the false bottom is uncovered unkindly: the hidden game of "bind him with sex but play innocent" comes out, and the partner senses the double bottom. Sometimes it is cold calculation dressed as spirituality: you manipulate through intimacy, convincing yourself you expect nothing. The neighbors decide: with dynamic cards this is a call to open up honestly; with dark and static ones, a deepening of lying to yourself and dependence on others' reactions. The reversed advice: stop lying to yourself about what you want.

How it differs from Waite

The High Priestess — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe High Priestess
Manara Erotic TarotThe High Priestess

In Waite, The High Priestess is the keeper of secret knowledge: between the black and white pillars, the Torah scroll on her lap, a crescent moon at her feet. Her secret is wisdom and intuition, chaste and majestic. Manara translates the "secret" into the realm of the flesh: beneath the nun's habit lies nakedness, and hidden knowledge turns into hidden desire. Where Waite guards an innermost truth, Manara hides ordinary lust beneath a mask of righteousness and asks: what is it you really reach for?
