Queen of Pentacles

Deviant Moon Tarot
nurturing abundancepractical wisdomearthly generositysensual richnessfertile stability

A gracious queen revels in the luxury of her life, yet is removed from the needs of her people. She displays the royal pentacle to an audience of dolls, mistakenly believing that society will benefit from this gesture of misplaced compassion.

The card's image

On the throne sits a gracious Queen of Pentacles, immersed in the luxury of her life. She is accustomed to abundance and enjoys it, but has grown distant from the real needs of her subjects. Ceremoniously she displays the royal pentacle — but her audience consists of dolls, lifeless mannequins seated before the throne. The Queen sincerely believes that society will benefit from this gesture, not understanding that her compassion is directed into a void, toward those who can neither accept a gift nor object. Generosity that has drifted from reality.

Interpretation

The Queen of Pentacles is the highest expression of generosity and greatness of spirit in the material plane. Here she is gracious and immersed in luxury, but displays her pentacle to an audience of dolls: abundance that has grown distant from real needs. The card carries both the warm fullness of matter and a warning about generosity closed in on itself.

The upright meaning here is luxury, abundance, a gracious hostess, charity and magnanimity. This is an abundant home, hospitality, enjoyment of life's fruits. Waite reveals the bright depth of the image: wealth, magnanimity, security, the ability to see meaning and beauty in the ordinary — in a garden, in the body, in labor, in the kitchen.

Waite speaks of a soaring of mind capable of 'gazing into the depths of the pentacle and seeing worlds there': this is the one in whom earth has become wisdom, who discerns the spiritual in matter and wonder in the ordinary. She does not guard her pentacle like the Four Four of Pentacles — she gazes into it. Sensual enjoyment of fruits without greed, generous care of those near her.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Step into the Queen's mode — notice the beauty of the ordinary, enjoy the fruits without guilt, care for those near you generously and warmly. But check to whom your generosity is directed: the dolls here warn — do not give into a void, do not confuse a gesture made for show with genuine help; come down to the real needs of those around you. Near Nine of Pentacles the card calls to anchor abundance in stability; near Four of Pentacles — to open the hand rather than guard the pentacle, gazing into it instead. Be abundant, but do not grow distant from the living.

What the forecast holds

A period of abundant generosity is coming — material, bodily, emotional: a warm home, hospitality, enjoyment of fruits, care for loved ones. A generous, fruitful woman may appear in your life, or you yourself may step into the role of such a mistress. In the company of Nine of Pentacles — stable, mature abundance; near King of Pentacles — the fullness of family prosperity as a pair. Warm wealth and mature wisdom of matter — the likely outcome, but the warning here is to ensure that care reaches the living rather than going into empty luxury on display.

Queen of Pentacles reversed

The reversed Queen of Pentacles brings dependence on others for financial support, unreliability, poor manners in society. Luxury turns into lack of self-sufficiency: the queen, accustomed to abundance, can no longer support herself and loses her tact. This also covers suspicion, mistrust, apprehension; illness, especially physical, from exhaustion in caring for others; maternal overprotection that turns the home into a cage, or conversely coldness toward those near her; wealth that brings no joy. The shadow of the doll audience here intensifies: care cut off from reality turns into vanity or dependency. Near Four of Pentacles this is luxury sliding into stinginess and mistrust; near Five of Pentacles — the fall from prosperity into need. The advice of the reversed: restore self-sufficiency and tact, direct care toward the living rather than toward show, and do not dissolve in caretaking to the point of illness.

How it differs from Waite

Queen of Pentacles — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithQueen of Pentacles
Deviant Moon TarotQueen of Pentacles

In Waite the Queen of Pentacles is the highest wisdom of matter: a dark-haired woman on a throne amid roses gazes into the depths of the pentacle, 'seeing worlds there,' a hare at her feet, a flowering garden around her; she sees the spiritual in the ordinary. This deck sharply shifts the emphasis into shadow: its queen is luxurious and gracious, but distant from her people and displays the pentacle to an audience of dolls — generosity cut off from real needs. Where Waite gives mature, nurturing wisdom, Deviant Moon draws abundance closed in on itself. For Waite this is the bright side of the card; here the scene already carries its shadow.
